Infostoria Workgroups FAQ

How does it work?
An Infostoria deployment consists of a central content directory and a number of agents. The agents are installed on file servers, PCs, or content management servers. They discover content and register it in the content directory. People find content in the central directory and download it via the agents from the various locations.

Is my content secure?
Security of content is maintained at all times. Only files published in a workgroup are visible to workgroup members. No one else can see or access these files. Inside a workgroup, you can define access control rules at the level of individual files.

Does it work across firewalls?
Infostoria content relay servers are used to ensure that large files can be reliably downloaded across firewalls and slow networks.

What happens if the machine with content is offline?
People can still view content in the content directory. They can see image thumbnails and video storyboards. They can also submit requests to download content. These re-quests are queued and fulfilled when the machine becomes available. A popular file can often be served immediately from the cache of a relay server, even if the machine with the original copy of that file is offline.

Can I serve popular files from my computer?
Yes, definitely. If a file is popular, it is saved in the cache of a relay server. Most people will be getting it not from your machine but from the relay server's cache.

What is the agent's impact on my machine's performance?
The agent runs as a low priority background process. The agent's download size is just a few mega-bytes. Its memory usage at runtime may go up when content synchronization is in progress but remains very reasonable at all times. You can safely be running an agent on a laptop or a low powered server.

Can I share content now stored in Documentum, Sharepoint, etc.?
Yes, Infostoria has agents for a number of content management systems. We also offer an SDK that can be used to quickly develop an agent for a system that we currently do not have an agent for.

Can I integrate Infostoria with my enterprise portal?
Yes. The content directory can be accessed locally or remotely with help of a documented API. Infostoria can be integrated with an LDAP or Active Directory server for user authentication and single sign-on.

What are the platform requirements?
Infostoria servers or agents can be installed on Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and other UNIX flavors. The system runs with any database that supports a JDBC interface: MySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle, and many others. The evaluation copy of the product runs on Windows and comes pre-packaged with an embedded database.

How is the product priced?

The pricing model is based on the idea of server licenses and client access licenses. We offer three flavors or the product: team, department, and enterprise. The team edition comes with one server and five client access licenses. The enterprise edition consists of one server and an unlimited number of client access licenses. The department edition offers the middle ground. More details are available on our web site.
